Why Taste Is a Designer’s Most Valuable Skill in the AI Era

AI made production cheap. Anyone can generate a hundred layouts, logos or copy variants in a few minutes.

That moves the scarce skill from making to choosing, and choosing well is much harder to fake than making.

Why it matters more now

When options were expensive to produce, skill showed up in the production. That was where the years went.

Now the options are free and the bottleneck is judgment: sorting the genuinely good from the plausible but wrong, which is a category AI produces in enormous quantities.

What taste actually is

It is not a vague aesthetic gift and I would push back on anyone who describes it that way.

It is a trained sense for what serves the user and the goal. The right hierarchy. The honest amount of friction. The detail that builds trust. The option that converts without manipulating anyone.

Judgment grounded in experience and in outcomes you actually watched happen.

You can build it

It is a skill, not a gift. I have said this on a TEDx stage and I still believe it.

You build it by studying good work closely enough to see the decisions inside it, shipping real products, watching how people actually behave rather than how they say they behave, and asking for feedback from people who will be honest with you.

Deliberate practice compounds. Talent mostly determines how quickly you start.

Why AI raises the bar

Everyone now has the same raw output available. Generic work became worthless almost overnight, which is uncomfortable for a lot of people and correct.

What separates designers is the layer on top: the editing, the judgment, the decision about what is worth shipping at all. AI did not replace that part. It made it the whole job.

Questions I get asked

Isn't taste subjective? Partly. In product design it is anchored to outcomes like clarity, trust and conversion, which makes it arguable, teachable and defensible in a meeting.

Will AI eventually have taste? It can imitate patterns convincingly. Deciding what is worth building for actual people is a different problem and it is still ours.
