How to Use AI to Prototype Product Ideas Faster

Prototyping exists to let you learn something quickly and cheaply. Most of the cost was always production, and AI removes most of the production.

Which means the time goes where it should have gone all along, into deciding what to test and then actually testing it.

Rough layouts first

Describe the screen, the user and the goal, and take several rough directions.

It is the fastest way off a blank canvas. Reacting to something concrete is easier than generating from nothing, and that is true for everyone, not just people who are stuck.

Fill it with real content

Lorem ipsum hides problems. It is the wrong length, the wrong shape, and never has an awkward edge case in it.

Generate realistic copy, realistic data, and deliberately awkward records. Then look at whether the layout still holds. Half the time it does not, and that is the finding.

Make it clickable

Turn the concept into something interactive, or into working code if you can.

Real interaction surfaces problems with timing, flow and feel that a static mockup structurally cannot show you. You do not discover that a transition is annoying by looking at a picture of it.

Test the assumption that would kill it

Do not prototype the product. Prototype the one thing that, if it is wrong, means there is no product.

AI lets you build exactly that slice and have it in front of people this week. That is the actual change, more than the speed.

Then slow down

Speed gets you to the right direction. Craft is what makes it worth shipping.

Once the prototype has proved the concept, stop moving fast and design the version people will live with. These are different activities and running them at the same tempo produces something mediocre at both.

Questions I get asked

Are AI prototypes good enough to put in front of users? For validating a concept or a flow, yes. Say clearly that it is a prototype, or you will get feedback about the placeholder copy.

Does prototyping fast lower quality? Only if you ship the prototype. Which people do, and that is the real risk, not the speed.
