How to Use AI for UX Writing and Microcopy

Microcopy is high volume, short, and depends entirely on context. That is close to the ideal shape for what these models do well.

The catch is that default AI copy is generic and slightly over polished. Steering it toward your product's actual voice is the whole job.

Give it a voice

Describe how the product should sound. Calm, direct, playful, whatever it is. Then give two examples, because a description alone gets you an interpretation of the description.

Consistent voice is what separates real UX writing from filler that happens to be grammatical.

Give it the situation, not the action

The same button needs different words depending on what the user just did and how they feel about it.

Tell it the emotional and situational context. Not "label for a submit button" but "this person has just spent six minutes on a form and is worried they got something wrong."

Write the hard states

Empty states, errors, edge cases. This is where microcopy earns its keep and where most products have clearly written nothing.

Ask specifically for error messages that are reassuring, that do not blame the user, and that say what to do next. All three, or you will get two.

Do the last edit yourself

Cut a word. Add a bit of warmth. Make it sound like a person wrote it on purpose.

The last 10% of editing is the entire difference between copy that feels designed and copy that feels generated, and it takes about thirty seconds per string.

Questions I get asked

Will it sound robotic? By default, sometimes. Give it voice guidelines and edit what comes back and it will not.

Can it write other languages? Yes, and you still need a native speaker to review localised microcopy. Tone in a second language is where these tools are most confidently wrong.
